Important 2018 Freshmen Dates
Intro to D-West Football Terminology

Mulch Weekends – players are organized into groups to spread mulch at pre-sold homes throughout D-town. Players, along with adult supervisors, travel to area homes to spread mulch for a donation to the football program.
Team Mom / Dad - Primary liaison between freshman parents + booster club; communicates key football information to parents & players. Coordinate parents to bring food to Freshman assigned team dinner night, solicit volunteers for various duties throughout season, first stop for questions + provide guidance related to the football program.
Team Spirit Dinners – Booster parents organize a team dinner the evening before Varsity games. Each class is assigned specific dates to provide volunteers and food/drink donations.
Whippet Discount Card – This card is a physical discount card sold, by the players, to support the football team. Cards are distributed in July/August timeframe. Players are expected to sell a minimum of 10 cards ($20/per card). Parents can pre-purchase 10 cards for $200 or player can turn in sale money in September. Checks payable to: DWHS Football Boosters.

Freshman Football — What can you expect?
The freshman football team is run separately from JV and Varsity football — separate coaches, practices, games, summer camp. Varsity/JV football activities typically do not include freshman players/families. There are a few exceptions. Team activities that INCLUDE freshman players & families: weekly team dinners, mulch weekends, banquet, Discount Card fundraiser, varsity game off-the-field support, homecoming parade, and the golf outing. The annual golf outing includes a dinner and silent auction. Don't golf? That's ok! Come to the dinner/auction and get to know other West football families! (players typically do not attend the golf outing.)
General responsibilities of freshman football families:
- Gatorade: donate 1 case of gatorade at beginning of season
- Team Dinners: freshman parents bring food & drinks to 2 (assigned) Thursday night team dinners
- Whippet Discount Cards: sell 10 discount cards - $200. OPTION: pay $200 up front and take 10 cards
- Fundraising participation (mulch weekends, etc)
- Varsity Game Night - 4 parents sell programs + 50/50 at gate up until halftime
- Freshman Game Day - 1 parent distribute post-game gatorade & snack (soft pretzels)

From the Coach:
We will hand out equipment after practice on the first day of school. On this same day, players will be fitted for helmets (checked by the trainer), shoulder pads and other equipment will be furnished as well. We will have at least 3 practices in helmets prior to any hitting/tackling. Players need to adjust to the helmets and be familiar with assignments and schemes prior to collisions to avoid injury. Players will need to bring sneakers (in case of inclement weather), cleats, duffel bag or old backpack, and a towel for showering. Valuables, if brought, can be put in a zip lock bag and stored in their duffel bag next to our practice field (Large Trash bags in duffel bag keeps belongings dry). We are not responsible for any lost/broken items. Please plan on pick-up your son a little later on the first day of school. (6:15-6:30)
